Brewers hope to keep offense rolling versus Cubs

Baseball Betting Lines

04/23/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Good pitching and scoring runs is what every big league manager dreams of. So Milwaukee Brewers skipper Ken Macha must be resting well since his ballclub has been doing plenty of both this week.

The run-rampant Brewers hope to keep Macha pleased when they begin a six-game homestand tonight with the first of three consecutive games versus the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park. They have won four straight and started the flurry with an 11-7 victory over Washington on Sunday to salvage a three-game series. They kept the pace going in the opener of a three-game series at Pittsburgh with an 8-1 victory on Tuesday, followed by an 8-0 blanking the following night.

Things then got out of control in Thursday's series finale, as Milwaukee registered a 20-0 victory at PNC Park and handed Pittsburgh its worst loss in franchise history. Starter Randy Wolf's six shutout innings for the win were certainly overlooked by the offensive production from a myriad of players, including Ryan Braun, who went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, three runs scored and five RBI. Jim Edmonds had four hits, including a three-run blast, and Prince Fielder contributed a home run and three RBI.

"You have to respect the other team, never trying to embarrass anybody," Edmonds said after the 25-hit explosion. "It's just a tough situation, a tough scenario on both sides and you don't know how to handle it sometimes."

George Kottaras also homered and Rickie Weeks ended with three hits and four runs scored for the Brewers, whose last 20-run victory came against the Toronto Blue Jays back in 1992. It was the biggest shutout win since an 18-0 victory over Boston during the 1990 campaign. The Brewers also outscored the Pirates by a 36-1 margin.

Milwaukee, which will also host Pittsburgh for three games on the six-game homestand, hopes that Jeff Suppan will get enough run support this evening for his first win of the 2010 season. Suppan made his season debut on April 15 at Chicago's Wrigley Field and did not factor in the outcome of an 8-6 win, yielding four runs and six hits in five innings.

Suppan, a right-hander, is 6-9 with a 3.76 earned run average in 24 career starts against the Central-rival Cubs.

Chicago enters this series on a rough note, having dropped five of its last six contests. It lost three of four meetings with the New York Mets at Citi Field and is coming off Thursday's 5-2 setback in the series finale.

Marlon Byrd had three hits and a run scored, while Mike Fontenot and Kosuke Fukudome each had an RBI for the Cubs, who saw starter Tom Gorzelanny fall to 0-2 on the season after giving up four runs -- two earned -- in 5 2/3 innings.

"Every team has these stretches," Gorzelanny said. "We're hoping for us it's in the beginning and not at the end (of the season). We'll get this out of the way now, get back on track and win some games."

Ryan Dempster will take the ball for the Cubs on Friday and his only win of the season has been sandwiched between two no-decisions. Dempster beat Milwaukee on April 12 despite giving up five runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 9-5 triumph, then did not factor in the outcome of a 3-2 loss Sunday at Houston.

The right-hander fired 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball and struck out eight Astros batters. Dempster is 12-3 with 10 saves and a 2.88 ERA in 40 career games (18 starts) against the Brewers.

Chicago took two of three meetings with Milwaukee earlier this month in the Windy City and has won seven of the last 11 matchups between the clubs.
