Kaymer leads as Canizares falters in France

07/03/2010 - Paris, France (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending champion Martin Kaymer only managed an even-par 71 on Saturday, but it was enough for the third-round lead of the Open de France.

Kaymer finished 54 holes at nine-under 204 and is one ahead at Le Golf National.

Kaymer will be looking for the repeat, but he's atop the leaderboard thanks to some late hiccups from the second-round leader Alejandro Canizares.

The Spaniard double-bogeyed the 16th and 18th holes to shoot a two-over 73 and fall out of first place. Canizares is tied for second place with Steve Webster, who had a 70 on Saturday, at eight-under 205.

Miguel Angel Jimenez (66), Luke Donald (67), Damien McGrane (67), Francesco Molinari (68), Jyoti Randhawa (70) and Robert-Jan Derksen (72) are knotted in fourth place at minus-seven.

It was almost a miracle the third round finished, let alone even started.

Thunderstorms greeted the players, who were scheduled to go out in threesomes, but all off the first tee. As the delays added up, tournament officials decided to split the field, with half going off No. 1 and the other half off of 10.

That decision assumed that play would actually begin.

After four and a half hours, the third round finally started and it wasn't a great start for the third-round lead.

Kaymer, who toppled Lee Westwood in a playoff last year, bogeyed the opening hole, but got the stroke back at No. 2 when he stiffed his tee shot at the par-three hole inside a foot.

The German lost another stroke with a bogey at the par-four fifth, a hole he birdied in Thursday's first round. Kaymer got back to even on his round with a birdie at the par-five ninth, a hole he's birdied each of the first three rounds.

Kaymer played the back nine with nine consecutive pars, although he did hit a good approach to the last green. He didn't need to make any birdies to move up the leaderboard. Canizares took care of that on his own.

After a Canizares birdie at the par-five 14th, a hole he's birdied every round, the Spaniard was 12-under par and owned a commanding three-stroke advantage.

Things turned first for Canizares at the par-three 16th. He walked off the hole with a double-bogey five, but still held the tournament lead at 10-under par.

Canizares parred the 17th, but found water at 18 en route to yet another double-bogey. That knocked Canizares from the lead and gave Kaymer his seventh third-round lead on the European Tour.

Kaymer won three of the previous six times with at least a share of the 54- hole lead. He owns five European Tour titles, including this year's Abu Dhabi Championship.

"I kept myself in there," said Kaymer. "I was hanging in there. My game feels okay. I didn't play very well today, but I kept it together, which is important on this golf course."

Gregory Bourdy is the highest Frenchman on the leaderboard. He shot a one- under 70 to join Peter Hanson, who also carded a 70 on Saturday, in a tie for 10th at minus-six.

NOTES: Westwood, ranked third in the world, shot an even-par 71 and is tied for 21st at three-under par...Ian Poulter, No. 8 in the rankings, also had a 71 for a share of 21st.
