Marlins to call up top prospect Stanton

06/06/2010 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Florida Marlins announced Sunday that they will select the contract of top prospect Mike Stanton in time for the 20-year- old to make his major league debut on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Stanton, a second-round pick in the 2007 draft, will be promoted directly from Double-A, where he is batting .311 with 21 homers, 52 RBI and a .441 on-base percentage in 52 games.

An outfielder, Stanton stands at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds. In 323 career minor league games over four seasons, the towering slugger has hit 89 homers.

To make room for Stanton on the 40-man roster, Mike Lamb was designated for assignment.

In addition, the Marlins made several other roster moves. Florida recalled infielder Emilio Bonifacio and pitcher Rick VandenHurk from Triple-A New Orleans while optioning outfielder Brett Carroll and Tim Wood to the same club.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.

Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.

With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
