Peavy's shutout lifts White Sox over Nationals

Baseball Betting Lines

06/19/2010 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jake Peavy had his best outing in a Chicago White Sox uniform, as the right-hander tossed the fourth shutout of his career in a slim 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.

Peavy (6-5), whose earned-run average is still a robust 5.07, retired 20 straight hitters going into the ninth and survived a leadoff walk in the final frame to pick up his first shutout since August 23, 2005.

The former National League Cy Young Award winner allowed just three hits and two walks while fanning seven for the Sox, winners of five straight and nine of 10 overall.

Carlos Quentin drove in Omar Vizquel for the game's lone run.

J.D. Martin (0-3), in his fourth start since being recalled to the majors, was the hard luck loser, giving up one run on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts through six innings in Washington's fifth straight loss.

The Sox got the only run they needed in the fourth, when Vizquel led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout and came home on Quentin's two-out base hit to left.

The Nationals had their first two hitters of the game reach on singles, but Peavy got out of the inning unscatched by striking out Ryan Zimmerman and getting consecutive flyouts from Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham.

Peavy cruised after Roger Bernadina's one-out single in the second, retiring the side in order for six straight innings.

A 10-pitch eighth upped his workload to just 88 pitches heading to the ninth. Nyjer Morgan worked a walk to open the final frame and was sacrificed over to second.

Zimmerman, though, struck out for the fourth time, and Josh Willingham popped out to second after Adam Dunn was intentionally walked to put the go-ahead run on first.

Game Notes

Peavy has made 17 starts with Chicago since being acquired in a trade with San Diego last year. He has eight career complete games...Nationals manager Jim Riggleman was ejected by home plate umpire Sam Holbrook in the eighth inning...A.J. Pierzynski had three of Chicago's nine hits...Sean Burnett, Miguel Bastista and Tyler Walker each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Nationals...Chicago goes for the three-game interleague sweep on Sunday with Freddy Garcia on the mound opposite Washington's John Lannan.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Will he or won't he?  Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.

Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.

"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."

Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.

Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.

Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback.  It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.

Here are the football odds as seen at MySportsbook.com and subject to change after February 10, 2007 if not locked in prior to that date.
