Wells, Jays down Nationals

Baseball Betting Lines

06/16/2007 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Nationals, 7-3, in the second of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.

Frank Thomas chipped in with two hits and a pair of RBI and Alex Rios went 2- for-4 with a triple and two runs scored for the Blue Jays, who have won three straight and of their last seven.

Shaun Marcum (4-2) pitched a solid seven innings, giving up a pair of runs on three hits, while striking out 11 and walking three.

Ryan Zimmerman finished 2-for-4 with a home run and Dmitri Young added a solo homer for the Washington, which lost two in a row.

Levale Speigner (2-3) struggled, allowing seven runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out one and walked two.

The Blue Jays got off to a quick start, putting a run on the board in the first inning. Rios led off with a line drive triple to center and came around to score when Wells followed with a single to give Toronto the early lead.

Young's seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to lead off the second, tied the contest at 1-1.

Toronto got the bats going in the third when the home team posted four runs, all with two outs. After the first two batters were retired, Rios drew a walk and scored when Wells belted a homer over the left field wall. Following a single by Matt Stairs and a double by Troy Glaus that put runners on second and third, Thomas stepped up to the plate and drove in a pair with a single up the middle to make it 5-1.

Zimmerman's solo home run to left in the fourth cut the Nationals' deficit to 5-2.

The Jays continued to add to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Adam Lind, John McDonald and Rios hit three straight singles with one out to load the bases before a walk to Wells brought in a run. One out later Glaus was hit by a pitch that plated McDonald, increasing Toronto's lead to 7-2.

Zimmerman's RBI single in the eighth made it 7-3.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
