Top-seeded Caps try to end series in Game 6 at Montreal

Hockey Betting Lines

04/26/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Washington Capitals will get another chance to end their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series tonight, when they visit the Montreal Canadiens for Game 6 at Bell Centre.

The top-seeded Capitals jumped out to a 3-1 lead in this best-of-seven series, but failed to close out the set in Game 5 Friday night in D.C. The 2-1 victory was Montreal's first win in the series since taking the opener in overtime.

The Canadiens went back to Jaroslav Halak in Game 5 and the moved paid off as he came up with 37 saves to help the Canadiens stay alive. Halak was benched in Game 4 after starting the first three games and being pulled from net halfway through Game 3. He allowed just one goal to Alex Ovechkin in Friday's win.

"We knew it could have been our last game of the season," said Halak. "We came out with a lot of energy in the first and got those two goals. After that we did what we were supposed to and now we have to keep this going."

Travis Moen and Michael Cammalleri each had a goal in the first period for the Canadiens, who are trying to come back from a three games to one deficit to win a series for the first time since pulling off the feat against Boston in the 2004 conference quarterfinals. If Montreal wins tonight, it will force a Game 7 Wednesday evening in D.C.

Semyon Varlamov, starting his third straight game after relieving Jose Theodore in Game 2, stopped 26 shots for top-seeded Washington. Ovechkin scored his fifth goal of the series early in the second period, but Washington was unable to score the equalizer.

"We let it slip away, we have a Game 5 play in our building and we played like crap the first 10 minutes and the game was over," said Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau.

After losing the opener, the Presidents' Trophy-winning Capitals had rattled off three straight wins. Washington exploded for 17 goals in Games 2-4 before getting held to just one goal on Friday. The Caps have struggled on the power play and are just 1-for-24 on the man advantage during the series.

The eighth-seeded Canadiens, who were swept by Boston in last year's playoffs, have lost six straight on home ice in the playoffs. Montreal was 20-16-5 as the host during the regular season, while Washington had an excellent 24-10-7 road record.

The Canadiens could be without defenseman Jaroslav Spacek again after he missed Game 5 with an unspecified illness. Montreal has recalled defenseman P.K. Subban from Hamilton of the AHL and he will be available for tonight's game.

Washington centerman Eric Belanger is expected to play tonight after losing several teeth on Friday when he was hit in the mouth by the stick of Montreal's Marc-Andre Bergeron.

The Habs and Caps have never faced each other in the postseason before this spring, but played a very tight season series this year. Each team won two games and only one of the four tilts was decided by more than one goal -- a 4-2 win by Washington on Jan. 5.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl

NFL Super Bowl Betting

The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.

Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.

The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East.
